teach. eat. love.: Eggs

Happy Friday!  I thought I’d take a moment to share this awesome post on a unexpectedly complicated subject: eggs.

teach. eat. love.: Eggs.

Okay, so many it’s not unexpected that it’s complicated.  In fact, many of our food choices can be complicated.  But, armed with the right tools and enough information, eating well can be simple.  Eating for the environment and eating sustainably might take a little more effort.  But we’re better off for it in the end, don’t you think?

Drink it on Wednesday

In college, we used to joke that Thursday was the new Friday, and we needed a new Thursday.  Naturally, in the most logical fashion, Wednesday became the new Thursday.  So we created Wednesday Wine Night, which usually entailed a bottle or two of wine accompanied by marathons of Law and Order: SVU.  (We never really got to drinking on Tuesdays, but I knew of the existence of TNDC- Tuesday Night Drinking Club).

So today I want to share with you my latest obsession with wine, and pay tribute to some of the best nights of college.

Food Bloggers Against Hunger

Today, more than 200 food bloggers are joining together to raise awareness about hunger in America and the documentary about food insecurity, A Place at the Table.

While I don’t consider myself a food blogger, this is, in fact, a blog about food and its pivotal presence in our communities.

This past weekend, I went to the Grocery Outlet to pick up a few breakfast items for a homeless support network.  The first weekend of every month, there’s a collection for non-perishable food items, specifically breakfast foods like cereal, granola bars, trail mix, that they distribute every day of the week to a homeless community that spends the night in the courtyard on their property.  I just started doing this, but it’s the second time I’ve contributed.  Starting out, I really considered what I wanted to donate, and how I could make my dollars go as far as possible.  Grocery Outlet seemed like a better choice that Safeway or Raley’s or the Natural Foods Co-op.  I was careful though, while some sugary cereals were very inexpensive, I wanted to continue promoting healthy choices, even for charity.  I checked all the nutritional facts, and made choices to minimize sugar in cereals, maximize protein, avoid high fructose corn syrup, but not choose what might seem like hippie-dippie cardboard breakfast items.  It was a challenge to be sure.  But success comes to those who press on.  Five grocery bags later, it’s nice to know someone will have a healthy breakfast, supplemented with fruit and tea.

People go hungry every day.  I encourage you to write to your congress person here in support of federal nutrition programs.  Catch a screening of A Place at the Table if you live near any of these cities.  And check out the trailer below.

Drink it on Wednesday

I think Wednesdays are a good day to talk about delicious beverages.  Just to get us over the humpday.  And, inspired by my daily Saveur email and the copy of Best Food Writing 2011 I just picked up from the public library, I am pleased to share with you a splendidly delicious version of my favorite drink. Ever.   I didn’t have this exact cocktail from the Commander’s Palace when I was in New Orleans last, but I did visit the spirited SoBou which is part of the Commander’s Restaurant group.  The Sazerac was fantastic. So was the Negroni, but that’s for another day.

Your Spice Cabinet | Stronger Together

Spring cleaning includes your spice cabinet as well!  As you prepare for the goodness of summer’s bounty, consider this: a little guide to spices from the co-op blog.

Your Spice Cabinet | Stronger Together.

And to echo the comment on bulk spices, they are definitely the way to go!  Buying in bulk is often cheaper, and you can reuse spice jars which is even better than recycling.  Last week, I got 1/2 pound of  garlic powder (I go through that stuff like mad) for $4.50 and the jar would have cost me the same amount for 1/3 of the amount.  Sweet!  Or should I say savory.

Happy spicing!

Farm to Fork Field Trip: Restaurant Thir13en

Maybe this is how I’ll get JL to eat kale, straight from my garden!

Restaurant Thir13en’s Red Russian Kale Pesto

  • 2 bunches Red Russian Kale, blanched and chopped
  • 1/2 cup pine nuts, toasted
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • salt and pepper (to taste)

Combine all ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth.
